🧠 Mental Health: Setting Boundaries Between Study & Rest

While revision is essential, knowing when to stop is just as important. Research in cognitive psychology suggests that overloading the brain can lead to burnout, reducing the ability to absorb and retain information.

Top Strategies to Balance Study & Rest

The 90-Minute Rule – Studies from Yale University suggest that our brains work best in 90-minute bursts, followed by 20-minute breaks to restore focus and prevent fatigue.

Tech-Free Evenings – Exposure to screens late at night affects melatonin production, disrupting sleep. A well-rested brain is a high-functioning brain!

Non-Academic Resting – Engaging in creative or physical activities (painting, walking, playing an instrument) allows the brain to process learning subconsciously while taking a break.

🏃‍♂️ Tip of the Week: The Link Between Exercise & Memory

Did you know that physical activity can significantly enhance memory retention?

📚 What the Research Says:

  • A study by Dr. John Ratey (Harvard Medical School) found that cardiovascular exercise increases the production of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), a protein that strengthens memory recall and learning ability.
  • The University of British Columbia found that regular aerobic exercise boosts the size of the hippocampus – the part of the brain responsible for verbal memory and learning.
  • Just 20 minutes of movement before studying has been proven to increase concentration and focus by up to 20%.

💡 Revision Tip: Take a quick 10-minute walk before your study session or try stretching during breaks – your brain will thank you!

🎭 Life Outside the Books

This week at BA English Tuition HQ, Bradley had an MOT nightmare. Let’s just say, last-minute panicking about repairs is not the way to go – just like revision! Lesson learned: Preparation is key for both cars and exams.

Jemma, on the other hand, finally indulged in Bridget Jones (a masterpiece, according to her) and Arlo has taken his love for Paddington Bear to the next level, whilst also attempting toddler rap battles, "uh-huh". We can confirm: it’s as chaotic as it sounds.

With a busy weekend ahead filled with friends, family, and tutoring, we can’t wait to get going.

Remember to stay focused and to stay BA...Tuition!
