Building Momentum

Published on 17 January 2025 at 07:00

The second week of January marks an exciting time as school life kicks back into full swing. For our tutees, it’s a fresh start and a chance to build on the momentum of the year ahead. With parents' evenings on the horizon (or just completed) this is the perfect time to focus on progress and set clear goals for success—whether it’s acing GCSEs, making a strong impression for Sixth Form applications, or confidently transitioning to the next key stage.

At BA English Tuition, we’re here to inspire, support, and to continuously look for innovative ways to support your learning.

What We’re Covering Within Each Unit This Week 🎓

Key Stage 3: The Art of Persuasion 🗣️

Tutees have been working on crafting their own persuasive paragraphs, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. King used:

  • Ethos (credibility): He appealed to his role as a pastor and advocate for equality, which gave weight to his words.
  • Logos (logic): His arguments were structured with historical evidence and rational appeals, such as citing the Constitution.
  • Pathos (emotion): His vivid imagery and repetition, such as “I have a dream,” stirred hope and unity.

Top Tip: When crafting persuasive arguments, aim for balance. Start with logos (logical reasoning) to establish a solid foundation, then enhance your point with pathos (emotional appeal) to connect with your audience on a personal level. Finally, seal the deal with ethos (credibility), referencing a trusted source or your expertise to make your argument irresistible.

Key Stage 4: Diving Deeper into Literature 📖

  • Jekyll & Hyde (Chapter 3): We’ve analysed the subtle tension in “Dr. Jekyll Was Quite at Ease,” where Jekyll’s charm contrasts with his hidden struggles. One tutee noted that Jekyll’s nonchalant demeanour towards Hyde’s crimes foreshadows his eventual downfall—a great example of dramatic irony!
  • An Inspector Calls: Our focus has been on Sheila. Tutees explored her transformation from a naïve young woman to a socially aware individual, highlighting how Priestley uses her to embody hope for the younger generation.
  • Poetry Cluster: Revisiting The Emigree, students delved into the theme of nostalgia and the power of memory. Next up is London by William Blake, where we’ll explore its biting critique of institutional oppression.

Top Tip: When analysing poetry, focus on how a technique (e.g., metaphor, juxtaposition, or caesura) shapes the reader's experience. For example, does a metaphor create a sense of hope or despair? Does a caesura disrupt the rhythm to mirror conflict? Always link the effect back to the poet’s intended message for a deeper, more insightful analysis.

Key Stage 5: Child Language Development 🧸

A Level students are still busy tackling child language development theories while completing last-minute checks on their coursework. One insightful discussion centred on Bruner’s theory of interaction, highlighting the importance of parental scaffolding in a child’s speech development.

Top Tip: When applying theories to exam questions, link them to real-life examples from transcripts. For instance, a parent asking, “What sound does the dog make?” shows scaffolding that encourages the child to develop vocabulary.

Safeguarding Is Our Priority 🛡️

At BA English Tuition, safeguarding is paramount. We encourage everyone to review our safeguarding policies, located at the bottom of every page on our website. A safe learning environment is essential, and we’re always here to address any questions or concerns: info@ba-english-tuition.com

Tip of the Week: Parents' Evening Feedback - What Next? ✏️

Parents’ evening feedback is invaluable, whether positive or constructive. Here’s how to make the most of it:

  1. Acknowledge it: Even if you disagree, listen carefully and ask clarifying questions.
  2. Create an action plan: Identify one or two specific areas to focus on (e.g., improving essay structure or time management).
  3. Monitor progress: Set weekly goals and check in with your tutor to stay on track.

Remember, feedback is a tool for growth, not a judgment.

Funny Flashback: Bradley’s Parent’s Evening Antics 🎭

Bradley’s Year 9 parents' evening started well—until his English teacher mentioned how his “quick wit” often derailed lessons. When pressed for an example, the teacher recalled Bradley rewriting Romeo and Juliet’s balcony scene into a comedy skit. His parents weren’t amused, but Bradley’s teacher admitted to him at the end of Year 11, that his creativity (although sometimes misplaced) was undeniable. Lesson learned? Timing is everything!
