We’re back with your weekly blog, reflecting on a fantastic week of learning. Whether you’re working on perfecting your essays, nailing a poetry analysis, or gearing up for your mock exams, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in!
KS3 Corner: The art of structure and storytelling π¨
Our key stage 3 tutees have been brilliant this week! π They've been honing their skills in structuring creative writing pieces, working on building tension, and crafting satisfying conclusions that leave readers wanting more. We’re super proud of their progress and can’t wait for next week’s sessions, where they’ll be diving into the exciting world of poetry analysis. Think poetic devices, hidden meanings, and maybe even a little Shakespearean flair. Keep up the fantastic work, KS3—your efforts are paying off, and we’re so excited to see where your creativity takes you this half term!
KS4 Power-Up: The mock exam mission π
Winter mock exams are just around the corner, and our key stage 4 students are hard at work prepping for English Language Paper 1 and English Literature Paper 1. From mastering “Macbeth” to dissecting “Jekyll and Hyde,” our tutees are facing their fears head-on and making fantastic strides in areas they were once uncertain about.
Don’t forget, we’re running special Pre-Mock Exam Webinars on Sunday 17th and Sunday 24th November from 6:30pm–7:30pm to give you that extra confidence boost before exam day! Perfect timing, as for many of our tutees, these sessions are scheduled for the night before each English mock. π
KS5 Knowledge Zone: Coursework & paper 2 prep π
For our key stage 5 tutees, it’s all about balancing coursework and preparing for the English Language Paper 2 mock exam. We’ve been amazed at the dedication and determination they’ve shown—whether it’s drafting perfect paragraphs or delving deep into language theories. Every session has been packed with focus and hard work. Keep pushing forward, KS5! The effort you’re putting in now will set you up for a fantastic set of results when the real exams are sat in the summer.
Bradley & Jemma’s top mock exam tips of the week π
Here are our tried-and-trusted tips to give you the edge in your English mocks:
Bradley’s Tip: Use “signpost sentences” in your analysis.
Starting each paragraph with a sentence that clearly outlines your point not only makes your argument clearer but also helps examiners see your thought process. Studies show that students who structure their essays with signposting often score higher because it creates a logical flow.

Jemma’s Tip: Practice timed writing for better exam time management.
One of the biggest hurdles in exams is finishing on time. Practice answering mock questions within strict time limits—it’s proven to improve your ability to think and write quickly under pressure, which translates directly into better exam performance.
Check out this guide that takes a detailed look at every aspect of exam time management.
The Power of Micro-Breaks β²οΈ
Studies suggest that taking short, regular breaks (around 5-10 minutes) during revision sessions can significantly boost concentration and reduce stress. This is often referred to as the Pomodoro Technique—work for 25-minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After four cycles, take a longer 15-20 minute break. These micro-breaks allow your brain to recharge, preventing mental fatigue and helping you to better retain information.
Pro Tip: During these breaks, step away from all screens (including phones!). Try some gentle stretches, grab a snack, or simply look outside. The change of scenery and small movement helps reset your focus.
What We’ve Been Up To: Fireworks fun π
This week, we took a little break from the books to head out to a firework display with our little boy, Arlo! We wrapped up warm, grabbed some hot chocolate, and watched the sky light up with every colour imaginable. Arlo was absolutely mesmerised (and a little startled) by all the noise! Watching fireworks was the perfect way to recharge, and it reminded us that taking breaks is so important—especially when you’re gearing up for big exams. See a snap from our night out below!

We’re excited to announce a new collaboration with Chunk Fudge! π They make delicious fudge, packed with flavoursome chunks, that’s perfect for a study snack (or a treat after a long revision session).
